Periyar on Women Empowerment
Though Periyar advocated birth-control as a step to preserve women’s health and to increase the standard of living, his primary aim was to liberate women. The less children they have, the more liberty and leisure they can enjoy. They can use their leisure to pursue higher things of life and for social purpose. In 1929, Periyar organised the first State-level conference of Self-respect Movement. It passed resolutions demanding equal rights to women with men in inheritance, in owning wealth, in getting education and employment. He utilised every opportunity and urged steps to be taken legally to realise the objectives of those resolutions. They have become laws in course of time to empower women socially, economically and politically. They have become achievers in all fields – arts, science, technology, sports, public service etc. We had for a long time a powerful Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Many women who belonged to Periyar Movement were great achievers in social transformation by their selfless and dedicated service.
